Roman Besley Bye wrote to the veteran broadcaster in early January and was totally stunned when he was sent a personal reply.

Within a week, Sir David sent a handwritten letter back saying: "Dear Roman, people have kept cats in their houses ever since the days of the Ancient Egyptians, best wishes, David."

Mum Eleanor Besley said Roman, known as Ro, was over-the-moon when the letter was delivered to their home in St George.

The 38-year-old said: "Ro was excited to see who the letter was from, and on top of the world when he discovered that David Attenborough had taken the time to respond to him personally, answering his question.

"Ro got a book about David Attenborough for Christmas, and after reading it we watched a few Perfect Planet episodes. Ro has been asking me that question about cats for ages. I said I wasn’t sure what the answer was but I knew a man who might."

Sir David's latest series A Perfect Planet started airing on BBC One in January.
