A “safe, social and sober” event for LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people is coming to Bristol.

Organisers, Sappho Events, will be hosting an evening of sober activities at Cafe Kino in Stokes Croft.

The evening’s agenda includes speed dating, a board games social mixer, queer writing workshop, and open-mic poetry night for queer creatives.

Sappho Events, which has run monthly events in London to much acclaim, received a grant this year from Consortium’s LGBT+ Futures: Equity Fund to help expand UK-wide.

Bristol will be the second stop on Sappho Events’ nationwide tour, following a successful kick-off in York. Bristol will be followed by Manchester in March, as part of a plan to set up bases in further regional hubs across the UK.

Originally founded as an alternative to alcohol-fuelled bars and LGBTQ+ nightclub spaces, Sappho began organising sober social events especially geared towards LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people, who have historically had less representation in LGBTQ+ spaces.

Sappho launched during the UK’s third national lockdown in 2020, at a time when the LGBTQ+ community had limited opportunities to connect, leaving many increasingly isolated.

Sappho’s CEO, Maryann Wright, has been a vocal advocate for safe and sober spaces for queer women, founding Sappho after struggling to meet other queer women at nightclubs.

Speaking about Sappho’s arrival in bristol, Maryann said: “For the past two years we’ve worked really hard to find a formula of events that offer the queer community fun ways to connect with one another and make new friends in non-alcohol-fuelled environments, and we can’t wait to meet the queer community of Bristol!”
