A city farm will receive a new lease of life, thanks to a new partnership with two other local organisations.

Hartcliffe City Farm will now be looked after by Windmill Hill City Farm and Heart of BS13, a charity addressing health and environment problems in south Bristol for more than 30 years.

The site will remain as a farm, but the new custodians hope to also provide jobs and learning opportunities, and to host activities for the local community.

The city farm will remain free, with detailed plans due to be shared with residents in early summer.

“We are delighted to partner with Heart of BS13 and look forward to helping bring the site back to life,” says Steve Sayers, chief executive of Windmill City Hill Farm.

“There is a long way to go and a lot of work to be done before Hartcliffe City Farm can reopen to the public. We are confident that with the support of the local community, we will be able to make Hartcliffe City Farm a real asset to families in BS13 and beyond.”

The farm closed its doors to the public in February 2021, having been run by Hartcliffe Community Park Farm for 40 years.

The farm was founded around 1980 and was built on land acquired by Bristol City Council from several pre-existing farms in the area.

The council worked in partnership with Hartcliffe & Withywood Community Partnership to help the community put forward three wishes for the future of the farm: access for all, engaging with animals and nature, and education and employment.

“This will be a great opportunity to extend our environmental action work and give BS13 a brilliant city farm to be proud of,” says Georgina Perry, executive director of Heart of BS13.
