Environmental action at Bristol mosque win national recognition

Easton Jamia Mosque received the ‘Best Green Initiative’ award at the fourth British Beacon Mosque Awards Ceremony, which seeks to showcase positive work within towns and cities across the UK.

Leaders of the St Mark’s Road mosque worked with local residents and Eastside Community Trust to facilitate grassroots solutions to the climate crisis and highlight the need for individuals to take positive action.

As part of this work, Easton Jamia Mosque released ‘A Muslim’s Guide to Climate Change’ to highlight links between Islam and the responsibility to protect our environment.

Speaking after accepting the award, Abdul Malik, chair of Easton Jamia Mosque, said he and the mosque community were humbled and honoured to receive the national recognition.

“Climate change is something that affects us all and needs our care and attention,” Malik told Bristol24/7.

“The Mosque feels that the responsibility is upon them to propagate the true message of Islam, which teaches about sustainability, productivity and unity in tackling such issues that face our coming generations.

“We're honoured that we won this award as we were amongst multi-million-pound projects in many cities that have far greater Muslim populations than that of Bristol. Winning shows how Bristol’s Muslims are at the forefront of innovation and creativity when it comes to issues that face our nation and humanity as a whole.

“We thank all those who nominated us and who have been voting and encouraging us to make such a difference in our truly diverse and inspiring community.”

A spokesperson for The British Beacon Mosque Awards added: “By working in collaboration with local residents, they hope that improving our environment will not only improve the prospects for our natural world but the wellbeing and sustainability of their community as a whole.

“The Easton Jamia Mosque are working with multiple local partners on a variety of projects and are also one of the community partners leading Bristol’s successful Climate Action Fund project.”
