Bafta will honour DIY SOS with a Special Award in December for recognition of its outstanding contribution to television.

The DIY SOS on-screen team, including presenter Nick Knowles, will share insights from the history of DIY SOS over the past 20 years.

The awards will also include contributions from those involved in the show, plus archive footage and special video interviews.

The show itself highlighted important social issues across not only the UK, but Bristol as well.

Bristol Live reported in the past how a dad was left in tears after a DIY SOS army transformed his family home.

The DIY SOS team renovated the home of Jan and Lucy Collins, who have triplets.

Two of the youngsters - Daisy and Amber - suffer from an incurable kidney disease which means they have to travel to Bristol four days a week for dialysis.

The team rallied a makeshift workforce to transform the family’s garage into a dialysis centre so Daisy and Amber could be treated at home.

More than 100 people worked on the project for free in Bristol, in a project that included presenter Nick Knowles himself.

And an army of Bristol-based volunteers helped the DIY SOS team transform the Pollard family's home after son Ryan spent five years in hospital.

Speaking about the award, Nick Knowles said, "The team are overwhelmed to be recognised by Bafta for all the hard work we’ve done over the past 20 years.’

"I’d like to thank all the amazing people we’ve met along the way for inspiring us to do projects and change people’s lives.

"I look forward to celebrating with the team in Bristol in December."

Paolo Proto is involved as an Executive Producer at DIY SOS.

He said: "Both the on and off screen team are thrilled to be recognised by Bafta. It comes at a fitting time as we draw to the end of our 20th year on screen.

"Over the last two decades we have been fortunate enough to work with brilliant and inspiring people up and down the country. The award is for all of them as well."

Since its inception, more than 200 episodes of DIY SOS have aired across the BBC, which has involved a cohort of 20,000 volunteers and an incredible £16 million worth of builds.

A Bafta Tribute: DIY SOS will take place at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre on Monday 16th December and tickets will be available from 12pm on Friday 8th November at www.bafta.org/whats-on
