'Bristol Girls Can' seek mums to be part of citywide campaign
Bristol Girls Can, together with Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC), is seeking mums of young children across the city to share their exercise stories in a bid to encourage and support others.
Josephine Gyasi, a creative producer with KWMC is leading the Small Steps project. “It’s been a tough year for mums of young children who were already facing barriers to exercise such as time, cost and childcare, so fitting in to the weekly routine time for exercise that’s fun and enjoyable is a real challenge,” she explains.
“That’s why we’re asking mums to share their stories and get involved. Whatever small steps you take to fit a bit of movement into your life – it might be 10 minutes with Joe Wicks, a swift walk round the park with a friend, or a five minute kitchen boogie with the kids – we want to hear from you.”
Knowle West Media Centre and Bristol Girls Can are inviting women to take part in two fun, free workshops exploring storytelling, filming, and editing to make a 30-second video of their story.
The only equipment needed is a mobile phone. Their stories will then become part of a new city-wide campaign in the autumn.
Bristol Girls Can is part of the national This Girl Can campaign, developed by Sport England, which aims to break down barriers to exercise and inspire more women to get moving. The local campaign encourages Bristol women to share their stories, pictures and feelings about getting active with an online community @BristolGirlsCan who regularly give each other advice, guidance and support.
Workshops will run in July and be located in south Bristol with a free creche and light refreshments available.
