A school has been praised by a mother of a child with autism for going above and beyond in these difficult times.

Lois Boysan's son Charlie, aged 5, has severe autism and is a pupil at the resource base at the Oasis academy Long Cross.

Ms Boysan said the resource base was for children who have severe and complex learning difficulties, with many of them having autism.

The mum-of-two added the current situation was a challenge for parents, as well as disrupting children's routines.

"It can be quite hard," she continued. "Having a child with autism is very isolating anyway.

"We are all stuck in the house all the time now and the staff [at the resource base] have been wonderful.

"From the very beginning, they have been making sure we have all the right provisions and giving us ideas of things to do at home and in the garden.

"They are following it up with daily chats with us on the phone and, during the Easter period, they were calling us every other day - they are so supportive.

"They really are a school in a million."

Parents were also being sent daily YouTube videos for the children, with songs for the children to sign and other activities.

Some of them are more specific to children with autism while others are more generic, such as making pizza, she continued.

The Clifton mum said the support had meant she didn't feel alone throughout this difficult time, adding she felt there was always someone there to talk to.

"Charlie is getting bored but, with the sunny weather, the garden has been the saving grace.

"We try to do activities with him every day, but it is nowhere near as good as the education he would get at the resource base."
