After recognising the amount of plastic wasted by meat packaging industry each year, 38-year-old Amy Osborne, owner of Dave Giles butchers, decided it was time to make a change.

Earlier this year the established butcher and her son Jack Osborne launched a 'reduce plastic waste' incentive encouraging people to bring their own reusable tubs to help the business reduce its carbon footprint.

Having worked in the meat industry since she was 14-years-old Ms Osborne says everything is covered in plastic.

Ms Osborne said: “Everything we sell is packaged, so we thought if customers could bring in their own reusable container, we could drastically reduce our waste."

She said: "The local takeaway businesses supply plastic containers on a daily basis so I thought, instead of people throwing them away, why not reuse them instead."

Six months on, Ms Osborne has witnessed a rise in the number of people bringing their own reusable tubs to the store - even with their names written on it.

“We are not expecting people to bring reusable tubs with them everywhere they go, we just want them to think about reducing their waste by planning ahead more.
