How boy from St Pauls Carnival book returned 37 years later

Back in 1982, a teacher at an inner-city primary school in Bristol decided to write a children’s book to tell all the young people of Bristol about St Paul’s Carnival.

It told the story of two young siblings growing up in Bristol, preparing for carnival and then taking part.

And it was illustrated with photographs of a real-life brother and sister, Adrian Stone and his sister Samantha, pictured making costumes, running into class, getting ready for the biggest day of the year in their community.

The book was read by thousands of children around Bristol in the early 1980s, and did much to spread the word about the carnival and its purpose.
